We've Been Very Trusting of Steve Forbes... But upon closer examination, maybe he really is up to something, something no good. Recently Bob Dole came out of exile and obscurity to accuse this "perpetrator" of plotting the destruction of the Republican party and its eventual nominee. Dole's charge that Forbes has been removing campaign signs from yards hit him hard. Now we are starting to notice the pattern: Steve Forbes' style is becoming very familiar, dirty tricks and a quick denial. Hit and run. George W. Bush says Steve Forbes is making bogus pictures of him, big misplaced ears coming out his neck, and Steve Forbes says he's not. We decided to look more closely at some of the campaign literature that's been coming in. A nice big brochure from Alan Keyes in which he's proclaimed the Ronald Reagan of the 21st century; no problem there. A cassette from Gary Bauer and even a Christmas card; seems pretty normal. A Pat Buchanan hat obviously sent by some prankster, but nothing about it that makes the joke obvious. Then this benign Steve Forbes brochure... "A Conservative We Can Trust," it says, and a nice little blurb quoting Gary Bauer to the effect that Steve Forbes is worth two Ronald Reagans; nothing there we can fault. |
