Education in Kansas |
The recent decisions in Kansas having to do with evolution and education have drawn attention to that state's progressiveness. Now the rest of the nation can benefit from their insights and example. This website features just a few pages from the state's current history textbook. We pick up at the second page. (Page 1 only gives a quick account of the world's actual creation.) Page 2 is where it really gets interesting, featuring the day-to-day life of Adam"The First Man".

Most of Adam's mornings began in the same way, with him looking up at the big bright spot in the sky. It separated the day from the night. And after five of them came the weekend. |
Adam set forth with spear in hand for the day's hunt. There were plenty of apples and grubs back in Eden, so mostly he hunted for sport and something to do.

Adam wasn't really much of a fisherman. He would put a worm on the end of his spear, hold it over the stream, and hope that a fish would jump up and impale itself. In the process, Adam discovered two things: the sunburn and a short temper. |
Many of Adam's adventures were very dangerous. The saber-toothed tiger, for instance, is very tough to kill. The basic technique is to hold out your left arm and while the beast is chewing on that to stab it repeatedly in the throat with your right. It was on this hunting trip that Adam retreated and said, "Discretion is the better part of valour."

Adam had a few good friends in the monkey family, and occasionally enjoyed pleasant times hanging out with them. But as the years passed it seemed they had less and less in common, so his visits became much rarer. |
Adam faced some very fearsome challenges. Killing a mammoth with a hatchet is a lot harder than it sounds, and he was not always successful. It was on one of these occasions that he discovered the 400-yard dash. |
Adam had one true friend, his dog Buck. He depended on Buck to warn him of danger, such as rats around the grain or a mammoth passing by with a hatchet in its forehead. |
Adam was in top form and could really run. Later he built some other outhouses so he wouldn't have to return home as often. |
Adam took some animals for their skins. He was always looking for ways to improve his wardrobe. For example, with this animal he was able to make a pair of soft slippers and a second suspender for his everyday suit. |
One day Adam was rubbing a stick back and forth to keep his hands warm. He accidentally discovered fire! He put out the blaze at once and immediately began looking for a safer way to keep his hands warm.
Occasionally, Adam would meet up with some other person also claiming to be "The First Man." These he dealt with severely, especially if they were senior citizens. |
